Heading into the penultimate round of fixtures, BFC Daugavpils held a slim one-point lead over FK Liepāja in the fierce race for the final European qualification spot. A win against FK Tukums 2000 would place Daugavpils in an extremely commanding position, whereas Liepāja understood that if their direct rivals managed to win, only collecting all three points against SK Super Nova would keep their lingering European ambitions alive.
Daugavpils ultimately delivered precisely what was demanded of them, executing a composed and controlled performance against Tukums to seal a vital and historic victory on home turf.
The hosts managed to break the scoreless deadlock in the 29th minute when Ervīns Piņaskins successfully found the back of the net following a corner kick delivery, giving Daugavpils an early 1-0 advantage. The visiting side proved unable to mount any sort of response, and Daugavpils eventually doubled their cushion in the 76th minute. A swift and lethal counterattack culminated with Piņaskins providing the decisive pass for Daniel Kiwinda, who finished clinically to make it 2-0 and put the final match result beyond any doubt.
Ervīns Piņaskins concluded the afternoon with both a goal and an assist as Daugavpils successfully completed their required share of the work, leaving FK Liepāja needing a victory to prevent their rivals from locking down European qualification.
However, events unfolding on the other side of Latvia developed in an extraordinary and dramatic fashion. Liepāja welcomed Super Nova to their stadium knowing that anything less than a full three points would instantly shatter their European dreams, and the hosts initially appeared to be firmly on course to secure the necessary result.
Following a relatively quiet and uneventful opening half of football, Liepāja managed to take the lead in the 39th minute when Amar Haidara converted cleanly following an assist provided by teammate Bart Straalman.
That opening goal handed the hosts a narrow advantage heading into the halftime interval, but the second half quickly transformed into a chaotic encounter characterized by costly defensive mistakes, a red card, and repeated shifts in momentum.
SK Super Nova drew level in the 54th minute following a very costly defensive error committed by Andriy Korobenko. Valerijs Lizunovs ruthlessly capitalized upon the mistake to bring the scoreline to 1-1, putting Liepāja’s fragile European hopes under immediate pressure.
The visiting side then suffered a major setback in the 63rd minute when Latvia international midfielder Eduards Emsis was shown a straight red card, forcing Super Nova to play out the remainder of the fixture with only ten men on the pitch.
Liepāja required just three minutes to effectively capitalize on their newfound numerical superiority. Amar Haidara produced an outstanding, high-quality strike into the top corner in the 66th minute, restoring the hosts’ lead and notching his second goal of the afternoon.
With Liepāja back in front and enjoying the advantage of an extra man, the home side appeared to have regained full control over their European destiny.
Nevertheless, Super Nova steadfastly refused to surrender. In the 77th minute, Jegors Cīrulis unleashed a shot from outside the penalty area that Liepāja goalkeeper Dāvis Ošs managed to parry away. Valerijs Lizunovs reacted the quickest to the loose rebound and calmly converted from close range, completing his brace and drawing the visitors level for the second time in the match.
Liepāja were handed yet another golden opportunity to reclaim the lead just a few moments later when the referee pointed to the penalty spot. The heavy responsibility fell to Joseph Ede Oloko, who serves as Liepāja’s leading scorer and the top goalscorer across the entire Virslīga.
Super Nova goalkeeper Dāvis Viljams Veisbuks managed to save the initial effort from the Nigerian striker, but Oloko reacted quickest to the rebound and converted to restore Liepāja’s narrow advantage at 3-2.
It marked Oloko’s 29th league goal of the ongoing campaign, and once again the hosts appeared to have done just enough to keep their European aspirations alive.
Yet another severe defensive lapse ultimately proved fatal. Despite maintaining their numerical advantage on the pitch, Liepāja allowed former player Ivans Patrikejevs to run completely unchecked in behind their defensive line. Patrikejevs then located Agris Glaudāns, who applied the finishing touch to make the score 3-3.
That dramatic equaliser sparked jubilant celebrations among the Super Nova players and provided equally welcome news for Daugavpils, whose European qualification was now rapidly approaching.
Liepāja desperately searched for a fourth goal throughout the closing stages of the match, knowing full well that only a victory could keep them in contention.
Five minutes into stoppage time, Vjačeslavs Isajevs was handed a golden opportunity to restore the hosts’ lead once again.
The defender rose high to meet a delivery inside the penalty area and directed a powerful header toward the goal, but Veisbuks produced an outstanding save to preserve the draw and deny Liepāja a dramatic late winner.
The final whistle confirmed a remarkable 3-3 draw, with Liepāja having surrendered their lead on three separate occasions, including twice while playing against ten men.
The dropped points officially ended Liepāja’s hopes of qualifying for European competition, confirming that the Kurzeme club cannot finish any higher than fifth place in the final Virslīga standings.
For Daugavpils, however, the afternoon marked a truly historic achievement. Their 2-0 victory over Tukums, combined with Liepāja’s failure to defeat Super Nova, secured fourth place in the league table – representing the highest finish in the entire history of BFC Daugavpils.
The final results also mean that Daugavpils will officially return to European competition next summer for only the second time in the club’s history.
