Kauno Žalgiris have officially been crowned as the champions of the Lithuanian Toplyga for the second year in a row. They achieved this feat by bouncing back from an early deficit to secure a convincing 4-1 victory away against Hegelmann. Led by manager Željko Sopic, the squad successfully locked down the championship title with one round of fixtures still remaining in the season. This triumph also completed a truly historic domestic treble for the organization, as they had previously captured both the Lithuanian Cup and the Lithuanian Super Cup earlier in the campaign.
The team had previously missed an initial chance to wrap up the championship following a scoreless derby match against Vilnius Žalgiris in the round prior. Consequently, Kauno Žalgiris arrived for their fixture against Hegelmann aware that securing even a single point would be enough to officially claim the title.
Looking at the history between the two teams prior to this encounter, the defending champions held a strong head-to-head record against Hegelmann over the course of the current season. They had emerged victorious in both of their home fixtures against them, while also managing a draw during their previous trip to play at their opponents’ stadium.
Despite this favorable historical record, the evening could not have started in a worse manner for Sopic and his players. Just two minutes had elapsed on the clock when a loose pass in the center of the pitch enabled Hegelmann to break quickly on a counterattack. The ball eventually made its way to Dominykas Pašilys positioned out on the right flank, where he successfully bypassed his defender before unleashing a powerful strike that found the far bottom corner of the net.
This rapid breakthrough handed Hegelmann their very first lead over Kauno Žalgiris across all of their meetings this season, while temporarily putting the visiting side’s championship celebrations on hold. In response, Kauno Žalgiris immediately seized control of the ball possession and began pushing numbers forward in an aggressive search for an equalizing goal.
The visiting team proceeded to mount wave after wave of offensive pressure, regularly sending crosses into the penalty box. Nevertheless, despite maintaining clear territorial dominance, they initially found it difficult to generate clear-cut scoring opportunities against a disciplined and well-organized Hegelmann defensive unit.
The dynamic of the match shifted midway through the opening half when the reigning champions managed to completely turn the scoreline around by netting two goals in a brief span of just three minutes.
The equalizer materialized in the 29th minute following a delivery into the penalty area from Anton Tolordava. Leon Krekovic made an unchecked run into open space, placing himself in a prime position to find the back of the net. Although his initial effort was not struck cleanly, the Croatian player reacted with urgency and scored on his second attempt, getting the better of goalkeeper Rokas Bagdonavičius to level the score at 1-1.
Only three minutes later, Kauno Žalgiris finalized their turnaround by taking full advantage of a costly error made by the home side. Hegelmann surrendered possession just outside the boundaries of their own penalty box, allowing the visitors to instantly initiate a swift attack.
Anthony Kalik directed the ball into the danger area toward Vykintas Slivka, whose subsequent shot happened to strike his own teammate, Gabriel Debeljuh. The resulting deflection completely threw goalkeeper Bagdonavičius off balance, directing the ball over the line and handing Kauno Žalgiris a 2-1 lead.
Having found themselves trailing after only two minutes of play, the visitors suddenly held the advantage and were within arm’s reach of capturing another league title. The scoreline remained unchanged through the remainder of the first half, leaving Sopic’s squad just 45 minutes away from securing the championship.
In response to the deficit, Hegelmann interim manager Tadas Vilkevičius opted to make a pair of substitutions during the half-time interval, bringing on Carlos Duke and Andrius Kaulinis. For Duke, this appearance marked his return to action following a spell on the sidelines due to injury, having not featured in a match since August 8.
Even with the tactical adjustments, Kauno Žalgiris continued to project the more dangerous threat after the match resumed. Within the opening minute of the second half, the visitors won a free kick in a promising location, but Krekovic was unable to keep his shot on target.
As the second half wore on, clear-cut scoring opportunities became increasingly scarce. Kauno Žalgiris maintained control over possession and dictated the overall tempo of the game, though they encountered difficulties in finding the crucial third goal that would completely seal the championship beyond any doubt.
Meanwhile, Hegelmann stayed within striking distance of finding an equalizer, yet they failed to mount any sustained pressure against the visiting defense.
The definitive moment of the match arrived in the 78th minute. Amine Benchaib delivered the ball into the penalty area, where Slivka managed to carve out space for a shot. His initial attempt was blocked, sending the ball high into the air before it descended back down inside the box.
Hegelmann defender Vedan Radonja had an opportunity to clear the danger away, but he missed making contact, which allowed Debeljuh to react the fastest and finish from close range.
The Croatian forward’s second goal of the night pushed Kauno Žalgiris’ lead to 3-1, effectively making the title celebrations a certainty.
Even so, the visitors were not finished scoring yet. During stoppage time, substitute player Ivan Fiolic added a fourth goal to wrap up a comprehensive 4-1 victory, providing an ideal conclusion to a historic night for the club from Kaunas.
The sounding of the final whistle confirmed Kauno Žalgiris as the champions of Lithuania for the second consecutive season, securing the trophy with one game left to play.
More significantly, the triumph capped off an extraordinary domestic treble for Sopic’s team, who had previously lifted both the Lithuanian Cup and the Lithuanian Super Cup earlier in the football calendar.
Kauno Žalgiris have now become the sixth Lithuanian club to accomplish a domestic treble, but they stand as only the third to secure all three trophies during a season that featured a standalone Super Cup final, joining Vilnius Žalgiris from 2016 and FK Sūduva from 2019.
Prior to the year 2016, the Lithuanian Super Cup was not played if a single club managed to win both the domestic league and cup competitions, meaning that several historic treble-winning campaigns from earlier eras did not necessitate a separate Super Cup victory.
That specific distinction places Kauno Žalgiris alongside Vilnius Žalgiris and Sūduva within an exclusive tier of clubs that have completed the treble by winning all three distinct competitions directly on the pitch.
The final match statistics recorded FC Hegelmann against FK Kauno Žalgiris with a score of 1-4, with the half-time score at 1-2. The goalscorers were Pašilys in the 2nd minute for the hosts, followed by Krekovic in the 29th minute and Debeljuh in the 32nd and 78th minutes for the visitors, topped off by Fiolic in the 90+1st minute.
