Sūduva Secures First Top-Three Finish Since 2021 After Defeating Banga 2-1

Sūduva Marijampolė secured their first top-three finish in the Lithuanian Toplyga since 2021 after defeating Banga Gargždai 2-1 at home during Matchday 35. Goals from Ibrahima Seck and Faustas Steponavičius brought an end to the hosts’ five-match winless run and elevated them to second place in the league standings with only one round remaining in the season.

Entering the match, Sūduva understood that a victory would lock in their return to the podium following four consecutive seasons without finishing in the top three. Nonetheless, their prior form had caused worries, as the team managed by Donatas Vencevičius had failed to win any of their past five league matches, suffering three defeats alongside two draws.

Notwithstanding that frustrating sequence, Vencevičius opted to make zero alterations to his starting line-up, choosing the exact same eleven players who had experienced a loss against Kauno Žalgiris a fortnight earlier. Simultaneously, Banga head coach David Marquese Afonso likewise maintained confidence in his preceding starting eleven subsequent to a goalless draw against FA Šiauliai the previous weekend.

The beginning phases of the contest proved relatively quiet, with neither club managing to establish total dominance or forge numerous clear-cut scoring chances. Even so, Sūduva successfully broke the deadlock in the 27th minute utilizing a set-piece situation.

Titas Milašius sent a corner kick directly into the penalty area, allowing Ibrahima Seck to rise above opponents and direct a header into the goal, thereby providing the home side with a vital 1-0 lead.

That advantage endured for merely five minutes, however, because Banga delivered a strong reply in the 32nd minute. Rokas Filipavičius discovered open space outside the penalty box and struck a magnificent long-range shot to equalize the score, leaving the hosts disappointed after giving up their early edge.

Since neither squad managed to generate any further major scoring chances prior to halftime, the two teams walked into the locker rooms deadlocked at 1-1.

Sūduva returned from the interval displaying heightened offensive purpose, taking command of the match as they hunted for the goal that would guarantee their spot among the top three teams in the league.

Their sustained pressure yielded results in the 54th minute when the ball broke favorably for Faustas Steponavičius inside the penalty area. The midfielder responded promptly and finished the chance to put Sūduva ahead once again, netting his initial goal in a span of six months.

With the hosts holding the lead, Banga were compelled to advance their players in search of another tying goal. Yet, despite maintaining some offensive possession close to the conclusion of the game, the visiting side found it difficult to generate clear opportunities against the defense of Sūduva.

A rare promising opportunity for Banga arrived via Deividas Lukas, whose shot necessitated a stop from Sūduva goalkeeper Giedrius Zenkevičius.

The home team effectively defended their slim lead until the referee blew the final whistle, sealing a 2-1 triumph that concluded their five-match winless sequence and verified their comeback to the Toplyga podium for the initial time since the year 2021.

This outcome moved Sūduva up to second position holding 53 points, which guarantees a top-three finish regardless of the outcome in the closing round. Conversely, Banga stayed in fifth position with 42 points.

Sūduva will finish their league schedule on Sunday with a fixture at home against Džiugas Telšiai, whereas Banga are scheduled to play host to Vilnius Žalgiris during their final match of the campaign.

The match between FK Sūduva and FK Banga Gargždai concluded with a 2-1 scoreline, after a 1-1 halftime deadlock. The goals were scored by Seck in the 27th minute and Steponavičius in the 54th minute for the victors, while Filipavičius scored for Banga in the 32nd minute.
