The youth team of FC Flora delivered an extraordinary display in the UEFA Youth League by securing a 3-2 victory away against Chelsea, completing a remarkable 5-4 aggregate triumph. Sander Alamaa netted twice, featuring the winning penalty kick, and Marten Kukkonen also scored to knock out the English powerhouse following a 2-2 stalemate in the first leg held in Tallinn the previous week.
Making the journey to the Cobham training facility of Chelsea as massive underdogs, the Estonian visitors carried momentum from their earlier surprise in the opening match. The away team implemented two alterations to their initial lineup, bringing in Jaron Silm to take the midfield spot of the injured Kregor Kalvik, alongside Nikita Kalmõkov who took over for Mark Kukk at the full-back position.
Chelsea got off to a blistering opening, claiming the advantage merely 91 seconds into the contest when Mathis Eboue slotted a narrow-angle strike into the far corner. Nevertheless, Flora answered back in the 16th minute when Alamaa punished a weak touch by Alfie Osborn, sprinting clear toward the goal and smoothly slotting past the keeper to level the score at 1-1.
Even though Chelsea dominated the ball, Flora maintained strong tactical discipline and kept creating danger through fast counterattacks. Alamaa came close to adding a second in the 33rd minute following a pass from Palts, though his shot was easily gathered. Both sides went into the break tied, with Chelsea holding 61 percent of possession while finding it difficult to fashion clear-cut scoring chances.
The second period commenced in nearly identical fashion to the opening 45 minutes, with Chelsea taking back the advantage precisely 61 seconds following the restart. Eboue provided a threatening cross from the left side, enabling the substitute Rabbaj to score from up close and put the hosts ahead 2-1.
Still, Flora declined to back down and brought the match level once more in the 55th minute. Alamaa surged into the box from the left wing before chipping the ball toward the back post, allowing Kukkonen to finish from close range, making it 2-2 and evening the aggregate score.
While Chelsea kept up heavy pressure, the backline of Flora held its ground firmly. The home side failed to capitalize on multiple chances, as Watson, Yisa Alao, and Hezekiah Grimwade all missed the target with their attempts.
The turning point occurred in the 78th minute when Zotov picked off a Chelsea pass to spark an offensive transition before being fouled inside the box. Alamaa took responsibility for the spot-kick and calmly put it away, handing Flora an incredible 3-2 advantage.
Chelsea launched desperate attacks looking for an equalizer during the dying moments, but Flora successfully defended their lead. Fifteen-year-old shot-stopper Andero Tatrik delivered a vital stop against a free kick from Watson deep into stoppage time, right before the referee signaled the end of the match.
This triumph secured a famous 5-4 aggregate victory for Flora, with Alamaa accumulating a total of four goals over the pair of fixtures against Chelsea. The Estonian youngsters now move forward to the following stage of the UEFA Youth League, where their next opponent will be either Vilnius Žalgiris or St Patrick’s Athletic.
